Nashville Prep founder named to ‘Forbes 30 Under 30’

Nashville Preparatory Charter School founder and Tennessee Charter School Incubator fellow Ravi Gupta was named this week one of Forbes magazine’s 30 Under 30 in Law and Policy for 2012.

“It’s an honor to see the hard work of our staff, scholars and families recognized by Forbes,” Gupta said. “Our efforts to advocate policies that create accountable, independent public schools are a natural extension of our passion to change students’ lives.”

Before coming to Nashville to start Nashville Prep, Gupta served as special assistant to U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Susan Rice. During his final year of law school at Yale, Gupta joined Barack Obama’s presidential campaign as the special assistant to chief campaign strategist David Axelrod. While an undergraduate at Yale, Gupta launched a scholarship fund for Ghanaian children and spent several summers teaching them English and other key subjects.

The honor was announced the same day the Nashville Chamber of Commerce released its education report card, which heavily emphasized the importance of Nashville’s charter schools.

“We are so proud of the work Ravi is doing,” said Greg Thompson, Tennessee Charter School Incubator CEO. “Nashville Prep scholars and teachers are proving to policymakers what is possible for all of Nashville’s children. They and other incubator school leaders are challenging policymakers to raise their expectations in Tennessee’s schools.”

As the first statewide charter school incubator in the country, the Tennessee Charter School Incubator was launched with one purpose: to close the education achievement gap in Tennessee by supporting the creation of high-quality charter schools in Memphis and Nashville.
