Empowerment Weekend’ inspires hope
A breast cancer education and awareness outreach initiative for middle Tennessee is being observed by sponsoring Pink Sunday/Worship in Pink (PS/WIP) Weekend on October 12-13 by the National Consortium of Black Women in Ministry (NCBWIM), Nashville Chapter; the Greater Nashville Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure; the Fairfield Missionary Baptist Church; St. Thomas Hospital; and Meharry Center for Women’s Health Research. Pink Sunday/Worship in Pink is a grassroots effort with local synagogues, churches and mosques to educate their respective members on breast health and breast cancer.
Churches throughout middle Tennessee will participate by hosting activities and encouraging members to wear pink. The concept of ‘Pink Sunday’ in Nashville was created in 2007 by Rev. Sondrea L. Tolbert JD, M.Div., director of the Nashville Chapter of the National Consortium of Black Women in Ministry (founded by National President Rev. Carla Jo Howlett).

‘Pampering With A Purpose-Pink and Purple Passion’
Enjoy a day of pampering as well as increase awareness of breast cancer and domestic violence. The day was created to be free for women 18 years and older as a shopping and pampering day for cancer survivors, domestic violence victims and homeless women to feel safe and loved and be treated like royalty. The Fairfield Missionary Baptist Church will have areas designed to look like a department store to shop for new and gently used clothes and shoes, toiletries and accessories. The women will be served delicious food including hors d’ oeuvres passed on trays and have the experience of being pampered with free makeovers, facials, massages, glam shots and a fashion show. Various partnering businesses and individual volunteers are participating and will present self-defense and job readiness presentations. The St Thomas Hospital ‘Our Mission in Motion Mammogram Unit’ will also be onsite providing free mammograms for those who qualify.

‘Pink Sunday’ worship service
To culminate ‘Worship in Pink’ weekend, NCBWIM Nashville will host the 7th annual ‘Pink Sunday’ worship service honoring survivors, those in the fight, and remembering those who fought a good fight! The messenger of hope for this citywide ecumenical faith service will be a survivor, Rev. Dr. Renita Weems, American Baptist College, along with the Pink Sunday Community Choir comprised of members from various churches of different denominations who will render the music.
