Scarritt Bennett Center will host ‘A Brave & Startling Truth: Reading and Writing Maya Angelou’ on Saturday, March 28, from 10 am–12 pm at Scarritt Bennett Center’s Raintree Room.
Poet and artist, Stephanie Pruitt, will take participants through close readings of several Angelou poems, delving into the personal, emotional impact of her work as well as her literary aesthetics. Pruitt will also lead a creative writing workshop featuring Angelou-inspired writing prompts and feedback circles. This workshop is appropriate for college students and adults. No creative writing experience necessary. Participants are asked to bring a notebook and writing instruments.
Stephanie Pruitt is a poet and conceptual artist. She is the recipient of an Academy of American Poets Prize, Sedberry Prize and Essence magazine named her one of their ‘40 Favorite Poets.’ Stephanie has taught arts education and creative writing at Vanderbilt University and Sewanee Young Writers’ Conference. She is a TEDx speaker, a Cave Canem Fellow and has been published in numerous literary magazines and anthologies. Her literary work has been performed at the legendary Ryman Auditorium. Stephanie has advanced the local creative community through work with the Nashville Arts Coalition, Nashville Next Arts & Culture Team, Poetry In Motion and numerous arts commission grant review panels. She serves on the board of directors for the Arts & Business Council of Greater Nashville.
This event is part of our Phenomenal Woman series, an annual celebration of the contributions of women in art, politics, religion, science and social justice inspired by the life and work of Maya Angelou.
The cost of the event is $10 and parking is available in SBC parking lots, accessible from 18th Ave. S.
