Expressions of Faith: Flock of God

Rev. William Watson

In Hebrews 5: 11-14, the writer explains that Christians have become dull to hearing the word of God. As adults, we should be teachers. Yet we still need again for someone teach us the elementary principles of the oracles of God. We have come to need the milk and not solid food. For everyone who partakes only of milk is not accustomed to the word of righteousness, for they are infants. But solid food is for the mature. With practice, our senses trained to discern good and evil.

The writer of Hebrews is telling us the body of Christ is to grow so we can train ourselves to be able to discern good and evil. This allows us the ability to go out and teach others about Christ, engaging communities and neighborhoods with the Gospel of Jesus Christ. There was a time when parents measured their children’s growth by a mark on the doorframe.

How great and exciting it was to see how they had grown. Something in us just wants to grow, and we get excited when we see and feel it happing. So the Hebrew writer tells it like it is, and tells us what is happening. Where is your excitement about growing? You may have become dull, meaning you are still the same height, but with no growth at all. Growth is such a part of who we are as humans. It is also a part of who we are as Christians.

Did you know the Bible even measures our spiritual growth? Read I JOHN 2: 12-14. Spiritual children are those whose sins have been forgiven by receiving the free gift that God has given us through Jesus Christ. Spiritual young men and women are strong because they regularly read God’s word, and they are involved in the causes of Christ. Spiritual fathers are those who have a relationship with the Lord deep enough to know God’s character personally (His eternal character). That’s how God measures spiritual growth. Get into God’s word so you can teach others the incredible gift that Jesus Christ has given us.

My weekly prayer is for the reader of this commentary to be spiritually inspired of God.
