Changing a lifetime of bad habits

Rev. William Watson
Rev. William Watson

The Body of Christ (the church) appears to have lost the mark of the high calling of Jesus Christ. Jesus left a blueprint for His church so vast, so marvelous, and so innovative that a fool cannot error. It’s supposed to be a living, breathing, expanding organism that permeates and transforms the whole world.

The problem is that as time went by, Jesus’ followers lost the vision and could not wrap their minds around such a magnificent plan. Rather than a community of loving, passionate followers of Christ, dedicated to demonstrating the power of the Christ-transformed life in a dark world, Christians began to do what they knew best–building structures, running organizations, and developing mega entertainment centers that would hopefully draw the crowds to hear the Bible story.

The sad part is that through all the excitement, we miss the transforming power of Christ in our lives. “Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his image with ever increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit,” 2 Corinthians 3:17-18. Christ is inviting Christians to be disciples. How will you respond? It is a daily battle. It’s a moment-by-moment battle. It is a battle for the attention and affections of your heart. Will you give yourself to be a disciple of Jesus Christ as He speaks into your heart, to transform what is in your heart to what is in His heart? “For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his son,” Romans 8:29.

The Christian walk is a whole new way of living. If you have been living your whole life not seeking Jesus or His will, it is tough changing a lifetime of bad habits. But Jesus will help us get better and better if we will let Him make us His disciples.

My weekly prayer is that the reader of this commentary becomes spiritually inspired of God.
