Expressions of faith: Un-lovable

Rev. William Watson

Recently I heard someone say that one of the hardest things to do is to love someone who is unlovable. My mind quickly went back to a commentary I wrote on Friday May 17, 2016 called ‘The key to the kingdom.’ It was from the love book of the Bible, 1 Corinthians 13:1. We can’t be true Christians unless we understand the principles of God’s love. The person whom I deem as being unlovable to me (and the people I associate with) may be the most lovable person in the world in other people’s eyes.

I pray you will spiritually understand this scripture and it’s lesson. In John 4, Jesus met a woman from the city of Samaria who had come for water to the well where He was resting.

When Jesus’ disciples returned to Him with food from the city, they marveled that he was talking to this woman (v. 27). Why? Because it seemed evident that there was no common ground between the two. Nothing about her would have caused the disciples to think of her as a potential follower of Jesus. Surely Jesus could see this too—so they couldn’t understand why He would spend time talking with her.

For a Christian to speak of another Christian as being ‘unlovable’ is like the disciples in this text who knew nothing about the love of Christ. A person that is unlovable is a non-Christian and one that needs help just like this Samaritan woman. Who better to show us how to relate Christ’ message than Jesus Himself? This Samaritan woman has deep needs, by every human standard. If she had dropped dead carrying water back from the well, people would barely have noticed. How often do we quickly pre-judge people and point out their lack of value before we consider interacting with them—especially about our message of Christ and their ‘eternity’?

Too many of us put forth a smokescreen to keep our dirty secrets hidden. But true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth. God is Spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth. Today’s Christians base their worship on knowledge and it’s incomplete. There is some truth, but there is also error mixed with it leading one to be misled. That living water is nothing more than love, the love of Christ in our heart.

My weekly prayer is that the reader of this commentary becomes spiritually inspired of God. Contact Expressions of Faith at P.O. Box 330127, Nashville, Tenn. 37203; or e-mail <watsonwr68@gmail.com>. God bless!
