Another acre and half half could be added to footprint of the Envision Cayce redevelopment of the former Cayce Homes public housing in East Nashville into a mixed-income, mixed-use community.

On Tuesday, the Metro Development and Housing Agency’s board gave the agency’s staff authority to enter a contract to buy several properties, including the location of Woodcock Memorial Baptist Church.

The total purchase price for the seven parcels on South Sixth Street that’s mostly owned by Woodcock Memorial is $1.39 million. In addition, Robert H. Braswell and Stephen F. Meade each owns a parcel.

The properties will be combined with adjacent MDHA-owned land for submission to the Tennessee Housing Development Agency as part of an application for a low income housing tax credit project, which the city’s housing and development agency said will also include workforce and market rate units.

Joe Cain, MDHA’s director of development, said the apartments planned for the properties would help to prevent displacement of existing Cayce Homes residents during construction under Envision Cayce.

Set Free Church currently leases the Woodcock Memorial Baptist Church property, which includes the main sanctuary at 816 S. Sixth St. The church and other targeted properties are around the MDHA-owned Lenore Garden Apartments at 601 Crutcher St. They include addresses 812, 814, 818, 820, 891, 895 and 899 S. Sixth St.
