TSU Sports Report: Basketball Senior Day and Fall Football Schedule

The Tennessee State University men’s and womens’s basketball teams hosted their counterparts from Eastern Illinois University at the Gentry Center on Saturday night, Feb. 23 in the final home game of the season for the Tigers for an OVC matchup on Senior Night and Courtside Dining Night. TSU honored female seniors Lauren Elliott, Tia Wooten, Asia Sims, and Franceska Brown; and TSU honored male seniors Armani Chaney, Jy’lan Washington, and Stokley Chaffee Jr. with a ceremony or each team prior to their tipoff. TSU teams returned to action on Thursday, Feb. 28 at Southeast Missouri, before ending their seasons at UT Martin on Saturday, March 2

While the Lady Tigers had already been eliminated from consideration for a spot in the postseason, the Tigers fought valiantly for a berth in Martin, where they lost a closely contested contest and a spot in the tourrnament. The 2019 Ohio Valley Conference Men’s & Women’s Basketball Championships is being held at the Ford Center in Evansville, Indiana this week, Wednesday, March 6 through Saturday, March 9. Mens games through the Quarterfinals will be visible on the OVC Digital Network, with Semifinals on ESPNU (March 8) and the Championship on ESPN2 (Sat., March 9).

Tennessee State announced its 2019 football schedule, and the slate features five home games and a trip to Murfreesboro to face Middle Tennessee for the first time since 1998. The Tigers open the season on Aug. 31 against Mississippi Valley State in the John Merritt Classic at Nissan Stadium. The matchup against the Blue Raiders is set for Sept. 7, almost 21 years to the day the two squads battled to a 28-27 contest, in favor of MT on Sept. 5, 1998.

The Big Blue will resume its annual meeting with Jackson State at the Southern Heritage Classic on Sept. 14 in Memphis, Tenn., after the 2018 game was canceled due to inclement weather. TSU will close out non-conference play by squaring off with SWAC opponent Arkansas-Pine Bluff. The Tigers and the Golden Lions will play on Sept. 21 at a location to be determined. Ohio Valley Conference begins with a pair of road games. The first is on Sept. 28 in Richmond, Ky. against Eastern Kentucky, followed by a trip to Jacksonville State on Oct. 5.

The Tigers return home for four consecutive games. The first, versus Murray State on Oct. 12 will be played at Hale Stadium. Homecoming is set for Oct. 19 against Austin Peay at Nissan Stadium. After a bye week, TSU will play back-to-back games in “the Hole” versus Southeast Missouri State on Nov. 2 and against Eastern Illinois on Nov. 9. Tennessee State closes out the regular season with a pair of road tests at UT Martin on Nov. 16 and Tennessee Tech on Nov. 23.
