One of my Fraternity brothers, notably PRIDE columnist William Robinson, has noted that TSU is such a cold-blooded HBCU that we need two homecomings each year, so we have one in the fall and one in the spring. Each weekend is full of activities that include, but are not limited to football, academic seminars, receptions/parties, health walk/runs, worship service and more.
Alumni Coming Home Weekend — affectionately known to some as “Homecoming, Part Two” — kicks off on Friday, April 12, with several activities, none more important than the inaugural Salute to Greatness.
TSU has a storied tradition of excellence in football, and the inaugural Salute to Greatness fundraiser honors Excellence on the Gridiron by former TSU Tennessee State football players who competed professionally. The event is April 12, 2019, at Renaissance Nashville Hotel, 611 Commerce Street, with a Reception starting at 6:00 p.m. and the Dinner Program at 7:00 p.m. (Tables and sponsorship opportunities are still available. Legends Weekend runs April 12 – 14, 2019, and the TSU Football Alumni Chapter is excited about hosting their 10th Annual Alvin “Cat” Coleman Legends Weekend in conjunction with the 6th annual Alumni Coming Home Weekend. Be a part of this festive weekend as TSU football players from 1950 – 2015 will participate in a game of flag football preceding the Blue and White scrimmage / Spring Game on Saturday afternoon, April 13.
Other activities on Friday, April 12: 9:00 a.m. Golf Tournament at Hermitage Golf Club, 3939 Old Hickory Blvd., hosted by Beta Omicron Alumni Chapter; 11:30 a.m. Engineering Awards & Recognition Luncheon, Jane Elliott Hall Auditorium ( Tickets – $50, Table – $500, Corporate Table – $1,000); 12:00 p.m. Alvin “Cat” Coleman Symposium, Indoor Practice Facility, Room 102, hosted by the TSUNAA – Football Alumni Chapter. 2:00 – 6:00 p.m. TSU Engineering Alumni Summit and Meeting, Research and Sponsored Programs Building, Room 163, hosted by TSU Engineering Alumni Chapter; 3:00 p.m. Scholarship Appreciation Reception, Kean Hall Gymnasium, (By invitation only) , hosted by the TSU Foundation; and 7:00 p.m. Salute To Greatness, Excellence on the Gridiron, Renaissance Nashville Hotel, 611 Commerce Street, honoring all former TSU Football players who played in the professional leagues (Reception begins at 6:00 p.m.).
Activities on Saturday, April 13: 8:00 a.m. (runners) ~ 8:05 a.m. (walkers), 5K Run/Walk, Start at Floyd-Payne Campus Center and Finish in Hale Stadium – “The Hole” (Cost $40 after 3/1/19) with Medal Ceremony Immediately following the run/walk in Hale Stadium – “The Hole”; 10:00 a.m. Spring Preview Day, Floyd-Payne Campus Center, hosted by Office of Admissions and Recruitment; 1:00 p.m. Legends Football Game, Hale Stadium “The Hole”; 3:00 p.m. Blue & White Scrimmage Game, Hale Stadium – “The Hole” featuring the Aristocrat of Bands; later that night, a Legends Weekend Hush Party will be hosted by One Party, One Purpose (Contact: jroach@hotmail.com).
