If you were to choose a name for yourself, what would it be? Would it be the name that you presently have? Or would you call yourself by another name? In early Biblical times, a name was given serious thought. Such an example as the name Samuel, which means, “The Lord hears.”
His mother prayed to the Lord for a child and God heard her and answered her prayers (1 Samuel 1:20).
Before Jesus was born, an angel appeared to Joseph and said: “You shall call his name Jesus (Jehovah saves); for He will save his people from their sins (Matthew 1:21). The name Jesus symbolized his mission and conveyed his purpose: to seek and save those who are lost (Luke 19:10).
The names and titles of God/Jesus are found throughout the Bible. They are found in the Old Testament and in the New Testament.
Our God is infinite and so vast. It takes many names to describe just who He is. He reveals himself to us in many ways depending on our various needs.
God referred to himself as ‘Jehovah’ (self-contained being). “I am the one who possesses authority,” Exodus 3:13.
‘Infinite’: God is beyond measurement. No beginning, no end, and no limits (Romans 11:33).
‘Omnipotent’: God is all-powerful. Nothing is too difficult for Him (Jeremiah 32:27, 26:27). He spoke all things into being.
‘Transcendent’: He is the highest order of being. He exists beyond and above the created universe (Psalm 113:4, 5).
‘Merciful’: He withholds from us what we deserve (II John 1:3).
‘Holy’: He is unique and incomprehensible. His holiness stands apart (Revelation 4:8-11).
‘Just’: We can trust Him to always do what is right (Psalm 75:1-7).
‘Love’: He gave His son to bring us into fellowship with his love. He encompasses the world and embraces each of us personally (1 John 4:7).
‘Good’: He is kind and full of good will toward all (Psalm 119:72).
‘Restorer’: He restores our bodies back to health and restores any broken relationships or financial concerns. He sent His word and healed and delivered them from destruction (Psalm 107:20).
‘Grace’: He gives us what we do not deserve (2nd John 1:3).
‘Jehovah Rapha’: The God who heals (Exodus 15:26). He heals us from all diseases.
These are just a few of the attributes of God. He can and He will restore the whole body back to health. Be patient and confident that God will do what he says in His word.
“I will restore health to you, and heal you of your wounds, says the Lord,” Jeremiah 30:17.
“Therefore, I say to you, whatever things you ask when you pray to believe you receive what you asked and you will receive it,” Mark 11:24.
