Using your believer’s authority to resist the enemy

The ‘believers authority’ is given to every individual that believes in Jesus Christ. This authority was given to Jesus by God and Jesus passes it on to everyone who believes in Him. We are given this authority over all attacks of the enemy and over everything on the earth (Matthew 28:18). The same power given to Jesus is given by him to us as a part of our inheritance in Christ Jesus. We have authority because we are in Him (Jesus).

Jesus secured all power and authority by going to the cross, dying and suffering for our sins and defeating Satan. Jesus came to earth as a man to recapture the authority that Satan had stolen through Adam’s disobedience in the Garden of Eden. After securing the power, Jesus freely put it into the hands of those who believe in him. His power was given to those who believe on Him (1 Corinthians 15:45).

Never forget that God and Satan are not equals. Satan is a defeated foe. His eternal future has already been decided by God. Satan will spend eternity in the lake of fire (Revelation 20:10). Satan tries to attack all believers in Christ, to get them to turn away from God. But all believers in God are sealed with the power of the Holy Spirit against his attacks.

To resist the devil, we “must submit to God, resist the devil and he will flee,” James 4:7. You may be saying ‘just how do I resist the devil?’ You resist him by standing firm in your faith in Jesus, because Jesus has already defeated him.

You submit to God by keeping your focus on God’s word. When you submit to God, you are trusting in His strength not yours for the victory. “You can do all things through Christ which strengthens you,” Philippians 4:13. When you submit to God you are living on the very word of God. You are giving God complete control of your life.

Do not forget that you are not fighting flesh and blood but an enemy that is unseen. You are in a spiritual battle, so you must fight with your spiritual armor that God has equipped you with in his word. Your spiritual armor is recorded in Ephesians 6:11-18. Your spiritual battle armor includes: the helmet of salvation, the sword of the spirit, the breast plate of righteousness, the shoes of the gospel of peace, the helmet of salvation, the belt of truth and the shield of faith.
