‘Cancer: My Journey in Time’ (part 77)
Taking care of neighbors

Rev. Enoch Fuzz

“How is your friend, Rev. Fuzz? I see that he is busy helping people. I see him on the news and it seems that he is doing well for someone who is suffering from lung cancer. He is always smiling and seems excited about what he is talking about.”

Of course, my answer to the question posed to me was: “He’s doing fine, but he is still not completely healed of his situation.” And my comment to the latter statement: “Yes, he seems well, but he is often out of breath. But he continues to work in the community without complaint. He is still healing, and dealing a lot with lymphedema.” He seems to be fueled by taking care of the community.

This year marks a continuing journey of the Rev. Enoch Fuzz, pastor of Corinthian Baptist Church, with his diagnosed stage four lung cancer.   Although he remains on this medical journey, his life’s journey is accompanied by a successful drive to take care of his community in every way possible. Each week, he shares one story of community efforts when there may be several that take place in a week’s time.

This installation’s opening statement was made after seeing a news segment on TV where Rev. Fuzz announces the efforts of Corinthian in assisting with COVID testing. He offered his church to serve as a testing site for free COVID testing as cases continue to surge. This effort was inspired by a conversation with Amanda Crawley who is on a mission to help provide more testing after the loss of her husband to COVID on June 28, 2020.

“A lot of people are scared, don’t want to know, and don’t want to miss work,” said Crawley. Crawley and Fuzz want to do all things possible to mitigate the virus and the spread of misinformation.

“Monday we tested 127 people for COVID at the church and 32 were positive,” said Fuzz. “Tuesday we tested 89 people and 14 were positive. We have the capacity to train many more teams of people to conduct testing throughout the city but need financial support.”

The definition of a ‘neighbor’ is: “a person or place in relation to others near or next to it; any person in need of one’s help or kindness.”

Along with COVID testing efforts, last week, readers were informed of the OneNashville Breakfast. However, as the weather prevented the meeting from taking place last week, the community awareness breakfast will be held this Saturday, January 15, at Kingdom Café on Jefferson Street. It will be a powerful meeting as it will also give honor to the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

These community efforts are an example of caring for your neighbor as the Bible states in Mark 12:31, regarding God’s command to “love thy neighbor as thyself.”

Thank you for your continued prayers for Rev. Fuzz. He continues to pray for you because you are a part of his journey. Visit his Facebook site where you will find him sharing his concerns with praise in pictures, testimony and song—along with information about OneNashville. As we continue to follow God’s guide, keep following his weekly journey ‘Cancer: My Journey in Time.’ Thanks for continuing to read and share this journey. May it add a blessing to your life.
