Fisk University celebrates Homecoming 2024 Sunday, November 3 through Sunday, November 10, with the theme “Unplugged.” Fisk has activities for returning alumni, current and future (prospective) students, and friends of the historic school, Nashville’s first University. Homecoming week celebrates long-standing traditions with a Royal Coronation and Ball, sports events, art exhibits, meet & greets, and of course, parties. * Denotes Alumni Events.
Sunday morning, Nov. 3, Homecoming Kickoff “Welcome to My Hoco,” 8:00 p.m. – 12 midnight, Jubilee Hall Steps. Monday, “My Sweet Homecoming (Y2K, 2000s Themed Party)” 11 a.m. – 1 p.m., The Yard. Women’s Basketball plays Trevecca, 4 p.m., at Trevecca Nazarene University. The Bulldogs Mens Basketball takes on the Tennessee State University Tigers, 7:30 p.m. in TSU’s Gentry Center.

Remembering Alicia Henry (May 11, 1966 — October 17, 2024)
During Fisk Homecoming, we celebrate the life of the late Alicia Henry.
Alicia strived to “make visible that which still often goes unseen” and represent a broader vision of society. Working in a mix of materials including dye, acrylic, fabric, thread, and paper Alicia’s work frequently explored themes of isolation and community, gender, and identity. Referred to as an artist’s artist, Alicia was always at work. Her studio practice took precedence over everything; apart from her family, friends, her birds, and her dog.
On faculty at Fisk University, she was always generous in sharing her wealth of knowledge and her work with students, patrons, and fellow artists. Originally from Illinois, Alicia got her undergraduate degree at the School of the Art Institute in Chicago, her MFA at Yale University, and studied at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. She went on from there to live in Ghana for two years as a volunteer in the Peace Corps.
Alicia was awarded Guggenheim and Ford Fellowships and was also a Joan Mitchell Foundation Grant winner in 2013. Her work has been exhibited internationally including shows at the Fisk University Van Vechten Art Gallery, The Hiram Van Gordon Gallery on the Tennessee State University campus, The Whitney Museum of American Art, NY, Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh, PA, and the Cheekwood and Frist Museums of Art, among many others. Her work is currently on view at Huntsville Museum of Art through February 27, 2025. Her soft smile, kindness, and depth of humanity will be greatly missed.
