History sings in a powerful evening of live theatre at Nashville’s own Off – Broadway gem, the Z. Alexander Looby Theatre. “A Vote of Her Own” is a powerful new musical production that tells the story of the fight for women’ suffrage in Tennessee. The play features well – know African American suffragette Frankie J. Pierce, African American Community Leader in Nashville, 40 – 50s, along with the many others.
In the scorching summer of 1920, Nashville, Tennessee takes center stage as legislators are faced with a momentous decision: whether or not to allow all American women, present and future, the right to vote. 35 states have ratified the amendment to the United States Constitution, and only one more state is needed. Determined forces, for and against, flood Nashville, attempting to influence the outcome. And it all comes down to the final vote. Will Tennessee make the perfect 36?
“A Vote of Her Own” includes both vintage music and original songs that are inspired by styles of the 1920s. Diaries, letters, speeches, and first – hand accounts of the unfolding drama are woven throughout the show to bring the voices of women’s suffrage to modern audiences. Filled with political intrigue, unexpected alliances, and comical legislative debates, this historical musical reminds viewers of the past as it continues to shape the future.

The new original musical production by Candace Corrigan and Janne Henshaw was inspired by the thrilling final campaign to ratify the 19th Amendment right here in Nashville, and is told through stirring original songs and vintage tunes of the era. This unforgettable production brings to life the women who fought for — and against — women’s suffrage, and their voices rise again to tell a story of passion, politics, and perseverance. ß
