“Purpose is developed under pressure. Precious jewels are developed from fiery situations. Power, prayer and perseverance propels one from the valley to the peak of the mountain” – Dr. Dorothy L. Brown

The Minerva Foundation in conjunction with Nashville Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority will host a Humanitarian Breakfast to honor the life and legacy of Dr. Dorothy L. Brown.

Dr. Dorothy L. Brown was a woman of many ‘firsts.’ She was the first African American female surgeon in the South; the first African American to be elected to the Tennessee State Legislature; and the first female clinical professor of surgery at Meharry Medical College. Dr. Brown has a miraculous story of triumph in the face of adversity. Her determination to succeed in spite of the odds that were stacked against her is a testimony to the power of perseverance and prayer.

The Minerva Foundation, Inc. will roll out the ‘Red Carpet’ to welcome Nashvillians and visiting friends to the 8th annual Dr. Dorothy L. Brown Humanitarian Breakfast on Saturday, November 8, beginning at 8:30 am. The Cool Springs Marriott of Franklin, Tennessee will be the site of the affair and the cost to attend is $50 per person. Group and corporate sponsorships are available. The Humanitarian Breakfast is open to the public and those in attendance will benefit tremendously from the activities of the day. Tickets and sponsorships may be purchased via the Internet by visiting www.nashvillealumnae.com

The guiding theme of the occasion coincides with the exemplary life of our courageous honoree and with the Christian principles of which the illustrious sisterhood Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. was founded upon. The focus for this year’s event will be ‘Persevering in Purpose!’ Special emphasis will be placed on the following areas:
• Hope – “For I know the plans I have for you, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future”
• Faith – “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for and the evidence of things not seen”
• Courage – “Be strong in the Lord in His mighty power”

Information will be shared by the ‘Ladies in Red’ regarding emotional, physical, mental and spiritual health along with the importance of persevering, healing and prayer.

Theologian, author, activist and the first female pastor in the history of New Covenant Christian Church of Nashville, Tenn., Dr. Judy Cummings, will be the keynote speaker. Dr. Cummings is a bold woman of God who preaches to empower, encourage and equip people for Kingdom ministry. If you have never had the pleasure of hearing this prolific, inspiring and insightful woman speak, you are truly in for a treat.

Sisterhood, scholarship and service are core values of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. As a collective body (sisterhood) the Minerva Foundation will award scholarships to deserving non-traditional students who reside in the Nashville Metropolitan area as well as to honor ‘unsung heroes’ and community organizations for their leadership and commitment to public service in their communities.

The public is strongly encouraged to attend this powerful day of prayer, healing and recognition. The event promises to be inspiring, uplifting and encouraging. All are welcomed to be a part of this great event as tribute is paid to the life and legacy of Dr. Dorothy L. Brown, a woman of many firsts.
