In spite of the continued debate concerning the authenticity of the ‘Willie Lynch Speech of 1712 Virginia’, I am convinced of the psychological substance as it relates to ‘mind control’ in the making of a slave. “I guarantee every one of you that if installed correctly it will control the slaves for at least 300 years. …take the differences and make them bigger… age; gender; color— pit the dark skinned slave against the light skinned; …use fear, distrust and envy for control… if used intensely for one year the slaves themselves will remain perpetually distrustful.”
Take note of (Simon) the Pharisee who had invited Him, ‘thinking out loud— talking to himself!’ Seeing this woman ‘kissing the feet of Jesus’ and ‘anointing Him with her costly oil’, he said to himself, ‘If this man were a prophet, he would have known who and what kind of woman this is who is touching him—that she is a sinner’.
2017 has been a year of the most divisive, most hate filled, most inhumane social environment in America in many, many years. Most abruptive has been the advancement of a National Agenda that has taken no thought for the welfare of it’s People causing much discussion as to whether or not the Nation remains in truth… a Democracy: Demos= People, Cracy=Rule. A statement that passed my feed on Facebook has remained in my thinking: “If the opposite of ‘pro is con’ then is the opposite of ‘progress, congress’? The ‘Willie Lynch’ syndrome at work against ALL THE PEOPLE of the entire… Nation. Raises the question for me, ‘Are the 99% identified by the Occupy Wall Street movement NOW… the New American Slavery?
I am reminded of my sorority days while a student at Tennessee State University, those years of ‘color blindness’. Intense initiation! There was an exercise where a Big Sister would point to any color and ask ‘what color is this? The pledges’ response is the same color every time. The organ-ization’s color is ‘all you see’!
Those years when ‘saying to one’s self’— (in fear, distrust and envy; ‘hating’) that persons wearing other colors are ‘not to be trusted!’ Not to mention the threats of violence. And to see how it has manifested itself among our younger generations— too, ‘wearing colors’. No longer the need for death and destruction to come from ‘without’, it now comes from ‘within’.
Don’t get it twisted. As a College Chaplain I continue to think and recommend the sorority and fraternity to ‘every person’ who receives the gift of this level of education. I also say to them it doesn’t matter what you pledge, one is not greater than the other. Me, I look forward to the day that the ‘differences made bigger in the mind of the slave’ might be as ‘the high places— they shall come down’.
I’ve been to the mountain top and see the AKAs and Deltas join hands in Washington, DC and “sing that old Negro spiritual… Free at last! Free at last! Thank God almighty…” The day that these two organizations get together ‘in being about the business of freeing our people’— we will be free… indeed!
Simon had a ‘difference made bigger’ in his mind— he, a Pharisee and she, a sinner.
He talked to himself, he said to himself that if Jesus were a prophet… He would already know…
