National Newspaper Publishers Association comes to Nashville

The National Newspaper Publisher’s Association (NNPA) Annual Summer Convention will be held in Nashville,  June 26-29, at the Hutton Hotel.

The convention is being hosted by Nashville’s premier NNPA members, the publishers of the Nashville P*R*I*D*E and the Tennessee Tribune, also a member.

Both weekly newspapers began in Nashville and have their offices there.  The Nashville P*R*I*D*E (Pride Publishing Group of Tennessee) was founded by Dr. Larry Davis and Dr. Cynthia Hodge; the Tennessee Tribune was founded by Mrs. Rosetta Miller Perry.

In 1941, John Sengstacke of the Chicago Defender called “leading” Black publishers to Chicago from across the nation for a meeting.  One representative from each of 22 publications attended the gathering.  The group formed the National Negro Publishers Associations.  In 1956, the trade association of the nation’s Black Press was renamed the National Newspaper Publishers Association.

Today, the NNPA is comprised of more than 200 Black owned and operated newspapers in the U.S. and Virgin Islands.
