Bordeaux area vegetable gardeners recognized

Join excited and concerned community members as they recognize the ‘2013 Growers and Shakers’ in the Bordeaux community on Thursday, Aug. 15, from 5:30-7:30 pm at the Hartman Park Community Center, 2801 Tucker Rd., Nashville.

“There is a multitude of families with backyard gardens growing thousands of pounds of food, fruits and herbs every season,” said William Sizwe Herring, director of EarthMatters Tennessee. “These neighbors know the value of local agriculture and all the associated benefits.”

To add flavor to the evening, gardeners are asked to bring and share a homegrown dish or salad bar item. Drinks will be provided.
Also on the agenda is a plan to formulate the vision of an Urban Greenbelt Growing project on West Hamilton.
“A Greenbelt holds things together,” said organizer Sipho Dumasane, whose home is next to the site. “It’s a chance for us to rebound from the flood of 2010 with something we can be really proud of. I envision all kinds of great outdoor, eco-active activities for both youth and adults.”

District 1 Councilman Lonnell Matthews will be present to update the group on progress and development in the district, with a focus on green issues. Neighbors can nominate a ‘grower and shaker’ for recognition by calling 615-252-6953 or just show up at Hartman Park on August 15.
