The Captain Luther J. Hunter, Jr. Memorial Foundation presented the 5th Annual Acappella Songfest Fundraiser on October 12th.  The Church of Christ at Jackson Street gathered for the purpose of raising funds for 2014 male graduating seniors.

“It was wonderful, we raised over $4,500.00 for next years seniors,” stated Thelma Hunter, coordinator.

The Captain Luther J. Hunter, Jr. Memorial Foundation was founded in 2008 by Capitan Hunter’s family.  Captain Hutner served on the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department from 1972-2002.  He was the “voice” for many of the inequities that existed among black and caucasian police officers.  He mentored many young police officers and was the founder and president of the first local Black Police Officers Association in Nashville.

Thus, the goal of the organization is to be an exemplary resource for families raising black males.  The vehicle for achieving this goal is through providing scholarships for graduating seniors, parenting workshops at the Church of Christ at Jackson Street and social skills groups for black males.

In the previous school year, five 2013 graduates each received $1,000 scholarships along with the first scholarship recipient college student who received $500 as he entered Tennessee State University.

Scholarship applications for the Class of 2014 male high school seniors remain available and contributions to the scholarship fund are graciously accepted.
