The Metropolitan Action Commission is now accepting applications from income eligible Nashville and Davidson County residents seeking help with utility payments such as electricity, natural gas and propane.

In June, the Tennessee Department of Human Services (DHS) announced the application period for the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) for 2013-2014 would begin October 1, instead of July 1.

The change is due to funding for the energy program shifting from DHS to the Tennessee Housing Development Agency (THDA).

“We are very appreciative of our partners’ help with notifying the community of the changes in the energy program’s application period and the support of DHS and THDA with the funding year transition,” said Marvin Cox, community programs director.

LIHEAP is a one-time energy assistance program that helps families with low incomes to meet their household energy costs.

Metro Action sends the payment directly to the energy supplier on the customer’s behalf.

The 2013-14 application for the energy assistance is available on the agency’s webpage .

The application period continues through September 30, 2014. Customers may print the application, attach the supporting documentation and mail it in or submit it in person.

Applications will be available at area libraries and the Nashville Electric Service.

Customers who need assistance with completing the application may visit Metro Action during customer care hours, which are Monday through Thursday from 8 am until 3 pm.
