Bell Witch play & Smoke: Ballad of the Night Riders hold auditions

Actors, both union and non-union, are being sought for Spirit: The Authentic Story of the Bell Witch and Smoke: A Ballad of the Night Riders will be held on Sat. and Sun., June 28-29 at Chaffin’s Barn Dinner Theatre. The plays will be presented at

All roles are paid. Roles for men, women, young adults and children of all ethnicities are strongly urged to audition. Actors who play musical instruments (guitar, banjo, violin, drums, harmonica, etc.) are also encouraged to try out. If you play a musical instrument, please bring it and be prepared to play something that reflects the Tennessee region (country, bluegrass, spiritual, etc).

Smoke: A Ballad of the Night Riders is a musical about the night riders in Tennessee and Kentucky who destroyed farmers’ homes, farms and families who couldn’t maintain their allegiance to the tobacco union. The score has a country/bluegrass feel. Performance dates: October 2-4 and 7-9.
Spirit: The Authentic Story of the Bell Witch is based upon Richard Williams Bell’s historic memoir, detailing the haunting his family suffered during the early 19th century in Adams, Tennessee. Performance dates: October 23-25 and October 30, 31, November 1.

Auditions are by appointment only. Audition times are as follows: Saturday, 10 am-12:30 pm and 1:30-4 pm; Sunday evening: possible callbacks. Auditions will be held at Chaffin’s Barn Dinner Theatre, 8204 Tennessee 100, Nashville, Tenn. 37221 (please do not contact Chaffin’s Barn regarding auditions. E-mail Producer Anna Filippo to sign up for a five minute slot ; if singing, accompanist will be available on Saturday from 10 am-12:30 pm; if acting only, please sign up after 1:30 pm.

Bring a theatrical headshot and résumé. Come dressed to move.

Prepare a monologue of no more than two minutes, and if auditioning for Smoke, also prepare 16 bars from a musical with a similar feel: i.e., Big River, The Robber Bridegroom, or a cut from a country/bluegrass song. Accompanist provided. Bring sheet music.

**Note: Local, community auditions (Springfield/Adams and Clarksville) will be held at a later date.**

Rehearsals will be held weekdays and weekends in Adams, Tennessee with possible rehearsals held in Nashville. Rehearsal times will be somewhat flexible based upon actors’ schedules. Rehearsals for Smoke will begin the last week of August, continuing through the month of September. Spirit rehearsals will be during the month of October, with a few dates possible in late September.
