The women of Corinthian Missionary Baptist Church gathered for their annual women’s day on August 24th.

Members friends, and the community came together another year to celebrate the work of women at Corinthian as noted from the scripture, “For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works…” Ephesians 2:1 (NIV).

The Women’s Day Celebration at Corinthian was a day of observance to all women. Guest speaker, Cheryl Mayes spoke about the women in her life…mother, grandmother, aunts, her children and her role as a mother.

Cheryl Mayes served on the Board of Education for Metro Nashville Public Schools for four years (2010-2014) where she served as the chairperson for the last two years.

Prior to becoming a member of the school board, she served on the PTA/PTO at the schools her children attended. She noted in her speech, “I am here to assist you [the teachers] with my children.” “These are my children and I teach them first and I assist you in their education,” she continued. Mayes would personally give her phone numbers to the individual teachers so that any problems with her children would be immediately be taken care of by her.

She was former Chair of the Antioch Cluster Parent Advisory Group and served as a representative 4 on the Director’s Parent Advisory Council for Metro Schools and appointed to serve as a member of the Student Advisory Task Force for Metro Nashville Public Schools.

Cheryl Mayes is a graduate of the Metro Nashville Public School system also as she is a native Nashville. She graduated from Whites Creek High School and Tennessee State University, where she received a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology.

Mayes has served on the Board of Directors of the PENCIL Foundation, Alignment Nashville, Nashville Public Education Foundation and the Tennessee School boards association.

As a mother of three children, a great deal of Cheryl Mayes’ life has consisted of many academic activities. Currently she offers assistance to Rita McDonald at One Nashville. “‘Let’s get these children educated’ is something Cheryl always says,” said Rita McDonald, Director of Community Engagement for Education at the Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce.

She also serves as Program Director for the Academies of Nashville Business Partnership for Nissan North America, Inc. with Antioch and Stratford High Schools.

Mayes community outreach also includes volunteer and fundraising efforts with the American Cancer Society, the YWCA of Middle Tennessee, Boy Scouts of America in Middle Tennessee, Hands on Nashville and vice president with the Multi-Cultural Business Synergy Team (MBST) at Nissan North America, Inc.

She is a member of the Word of Life Christian Center, International where Dr. Alexander Arthur, is her pastor.

The Women’s Day observance at Corinthian also provided ministry in song by the women’s choir at Corinthian and a recognition of the “Matriarchs of Faith” as they were each presented with a beautiful rose.

The Women’s Day chairperson was Myra T. Hall and co-chair, Rev. Mary Polk.
