North Nashville Conquering Diabetes Day this weekend

Meharry Medical College hosts the North Nashville Conquering Diabetes Day at the McGruder Family Resource Center, 2013 25th Ave. N. on November 15 from 10 am until 2 pm.

This event is great for everyone. There will be foot exams, blood sugar testing, food demonstrations, samples, special prizes, including: a George Foreman Grill, food measuring utensils, pedometers, and much more.

“If you don’t have diabetes, it is likely that you have a family member, a friend or co-worker that suffers from diabetes,” according to event coordinators. The first 25 people to register for one of the classes will receive the New Soul Food Cookbook for People with Diabetes.”

The classes are free and they offer great information and services for the entire family.

Diabetes mellitus (DM), also known as simply diabetes, is a group of metabolic diseases in which there are high blood sugar levels over a prolonged period of time. This high blood sugar produces the symptoms of frequent urination, increased thirst and increased hunger. Untreated, diabetes can cause many complications. Some of those complications include diabetic ketoacidosis and nonketotic hypersmolar coma. Serious long-term complications include heart disease, stroke, kidney failure, foot ulcer and damage to the eyes.

Globally, as of 2013, an estimated 382 million people have diabetes worldwide, with type 2 diabetes making up about 90% of the cases. This is equal to 8.3% of the adult population, with equal rates in both women and men. Worldwide in 2012 and 2013 diabetes resulted in 1.5 to 5.1 million deaths per year, making it the eighth leading cause of death.

Diabetes overall at least doubles the risk of death. The number of people with diabetes is expected to rise to 592 million by 2035.
