The Davidson County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO) has once again partnered with Needlink Nashville Thursday to deliver approximately 1,000 holiday food boxes to Davidson County residents in need. DCSO employees, including warrant officers, correctional services officers, and inmates work crews delivered the boxes.
“I believe it is extremely important for our employees to give back to the community year ‘round.’ However, I think it is especially important during the holidays,” Davidson County Sheriff Daron Hall said. “Whether they give their time by delivering food boxes, collecting toys for less fortunate children, or providing someone a sober ride on New Year’s Eve—it’s all for a great cause. For years, we have put our time, energy, and monetary donations into these outreach efforts and our employees truly have a giving spirit as evidenced by the continued success of these programs.”
Needlink Nashville is just one of approximately 100 non-profit organizations that the DCSO’s correctional services division works with each year, providing inmate labor to help the community. The DCSO hoped to help feed as many as 2,500 Nashvillians with this year’s delivery, marking the 103rd anniversary of program. According to Hall, this delivery is one of two special events this week.
“In addition to providing food for those in need, our employees have spent the past couple months collecting toys and monetary donations for our Toys for Tots campaign—and we will made a presentation to the Marines on Friday,” Hall said.
“This was the most successful year we’ve had in the nine years since the effort began. More than 3,000 toys were donated and $13,000 was raised to help provide a happier holiday to Middle Tennessee children.”
Over the years, DCSO’s partnership with the program has brought in over 16,500 toys and nearly $60,000. According to the Toys for Tots website, since its inception in 1947, Marines have distributed nearly 500 million toys to over 200 million children.
