Hands On Nashville is honoring Martin Luther King, Jr.’s legacy of serving the community with two days of action that will improve Nashville’s community centers.
The nonprofit is asking for volunteers to help honor King on Jan. 17 and 19 with two to three hours of their help for improving four of Music City’s community centers. HON is expecting hundreds to help improve the Cleveland, Coleman, Hadley and Looby community centers.
“Specifically at Coleman, we have a lot of white walls, and those white walls have taken a pretty good hit once the center opened in 2008,” said Stevon Neloms, facility coordinator at Coleman Park Community Center. “It’s nice to get those walls back to looking great.”
Volunteers can choose to either prepare each center for painting on Jan. 17 from 8-9:30 am or 10 am-1 pm, or help with painting on Jan. 19 (MLK Day) from 9 am to noon.
Additionally, this year’s theme is ‘Protecting and Serving Our Neighbors’ to which the Nashville Fire Department will be teaching volunteers fire prevention measures.
Today, Hands on Nashville is one of the largest volunteer resource centers in the world. In 2013, HON connected or referred more than 123,000 volunteers to service opportunities.
They offer more than 300 volunteer opportunities to the community each month via their partnerships with Nashville-area nonprofit organizations and our own Hands On Nashville programming.
Hands On Nashville’s mission is to meet community needs through volunteerism. They connect volunteers to critical issues facing the Middle Tennessee community such as hunger, homelessness, and environmental issues
