Mrs. Mai Olive Lusk, member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Nashville Alumnae Chapter made a generous philanthropic donation to the Minerva Foundation, Inc., in honor of fellow member, Mrs. Tommie Manning, in honor of her service to the Foundation and the Sorority. The check was presented during the Foundation’s fifth annual Games Extravaganza, held at the Goodwill Career Solutions Center. Each year the Foundation sponsors a day of fellowship with various card games, refreshments and door prizes.
Established in 1999 by the Nashville Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., the Minerva Foundation, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) organization that promotes and supports chapter public service programs. Minerva Foundation goals are to: engage in public service programs that promote and encourage high intellectual, cultural, and moral standards among residents in the Metro Nashville community; establish, foster and organize educational, historical and cultural programs that will provide meaningful inter-generational activities and improve the quality of life for future generations; administer services for the homeless, senior citizens and youth; grant scholarship awards; establish a cultural program; and preserve/honor historical events.
The Nashville Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta sorority has its roots in the establishment of the first undergraduate chapter in Nashville at Fisk University. An alumnae chapter was needed to provide an avenue for sorors to maintain Delta affiliation at the graduate level.
Nashville Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. contributes to the Nashville community in tangible and life changing ways. Long-term programs include seven annual scholarships given to deserving female, high school seniors, support of the Eighteenth Avenue Family Life Center, donations to the United Negro College Fund (to support Fisk University) and the Tennessee State University Foundation (to support scholarships for Tennessee State University students). Additionally, this chapter makes quarterly visits to Bordeaux Hospital, gives donations to the United Way, and has adopted girls incarcerated at the Woodland Hills Juvenile Detention Center.
