God visited His garden, and He chose one of his most beautiful flowers, Margie Ann Clay, on Monday, August 8, 2016 to come home for eternal rest.
Mt. Vernon Missionary Baptist Church, 1022 New Providence Pass was filled on Saturday evening as family, friends, and church members gathered to share in the home going celebration of Ann Clay. She remained a faithful member of Mt. Vernon from an early age and attended regularly up until her recent departure from this life.
In her earlier years, she gladly served on the Usher Board and sang with the choir. In her latter years, she proudly served on the Mt. Vernon Mother Board.
Born December 8, 1932 as Margie Ann Sadler, ‘Ann’ was born to the late Arbie and Jennie Sadler in Granville, Tennessee. It was there that she was raised and educated in the public school system of Jackson County. She was preceded in death by her siblings, Herman and Evelyn Sadler.
Ann received Christ in her life at an early age. She was baptized by the late Rev. Leroy Jackson and joined the Walnut Grove Missionary Baptist Church of Buffalo Valley.
Ann’s family life was quite fulfilling, first uniting with Walter Hancock. From this union was born three sons, Bobby, Tony and Joel Hancock.
Later, she met Johnny Clay, affectionately known to all as ‘Pap,’ of Gallatin, Tenn. They were married on May 14, 1961. He also became an active and loyal member of Mt. Vernon MBC. Pap preceded her in death. From this union came six children: David, James ‘Jim,’ Jerry, Danny, Charles ‘Charlie’ and Lisa.
Margie Ann Clay was a beautiful person with a lovely spirit who was dedicated to her work, her church and her family. She was a giggly and fun-loving person. Known variously as ‘Ann,’ ‘Margie,’ ‘Granny Ann,’ ‘Granny Mama,’ ‘Ms. Ann,’ ‘Mrs. Clay,’ ‘Mama’—she was a pleasure whenever anyone was in her company.
Those that she leaves to cherish her memories include her loving and caring daughter, Lisa Annette Clay; her dear and devoted sons, Bobby (Vanessa), Tony (Effie) and Joel Hancock, David (Karyn), James (Suzette), Jerry (Debra), Danny (Wanda), Charles (Melissa) Clay; special niece, Sherryl Cobbs; loving grandchildren, Quincy, Quan, Tony Jr., Troy, Jewell, Joel II (Bubba), Richard, Nicholas, Keith Wilson, Ramon, Jerome, Lalita, Marquita, Jedediah Hill, Brittany, Grant, Dewand, Darby, Breyana, Brannon; great and great-great grandchildren; nieces, Sunshine, Patricia; nephews, Michael (Vanessa), Darrell (Barbara); many loving great nieces and nephews, cousins, in-laws, friends and her church family.
Mt. Vernon Missionary Baptist Church is located in Madison, Tenn. at 1022 New Providence Pass where the pastor is Bishop Willie Joy.
