Expressions of faith: Life for a life

Rev. Monterey D. Lee, Sr.

No matter who you are, or what you’ve done God loves you so much that He was willing to sacrifice a life for your life. God is willing to offer you the gift of salvation only if you are willing to accept and believe in the only begotten Son of God. “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life,” John 3:16.

Are you tired of living a defeated life? Is it your desire to spend eternity in Heaven with the Lord? Do you desire to be born again and to follow Christ as one of His disciples? “Verily, verily, I say unto you, except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God,” John 3:3.

How is one born again?
1) Recognize you are a sinner (Romans 3:23, Isaiah 53:6).
a. No one is free from sin. We are born with a sinful nature. Unless you believe you are a sinner, you cannot be born again and enter the kingdom of God.

2) By believing (John 11:25-40).
a. Believe that God is and that He does love you. Believe that Christ died for your sins. Believe that He rose from the dead. Believe that He will forgive all sin if we ask Him.

3) Repent (Matthew 4:17).
a. You must have a Godly sorrow for the sins you have done and be sincere and desire to be free from them. Then one is made free by repenting.

4) Pray (1 John 1:9, Psalms 51:2-5).
a. In prayer one continues to confess sins to God and ask Him for forgiveness. We give God our heart and ask Him to make us a new person and promise Him that we will serve Him the rest of our lives as born-again believers. If you have taken these steps, you can be assured that your sins are forgiven, and you are a new child of God if you remain faithful and committed to the Christian life. Don’t ever judge yourself. Rather, examine yourself daily to make sure you do not live after the flesh, but after the Spirit. Discern the tactics of the enemy that will come to destroy and remove you from your rightful birthplace.

After you have been born again there are several things one should do to remain committed to God.

1) Forsake Sin (Romans 6:1-2).
a. As a Christian you can no longer indulge in a sinful nature, You must be removed from sin.

2) Live a changed life (2 Corinthians 5:17).
a. You will want to live a different life, one of service to the Lord and to mankind.

3) Read your Bible and pray daily (Matthew 7:7-8, 2 Timothy3:16-17).
a. To live the Christian life, you must spend much time reading the Bible and talking to the Lord God in prayer. This will keep you committed to your changed life. Don’t allow outside entertainment to remove you from your commitment to God. Whatever you commit to is what you will become.

4) Find a church home (Hebrews 10:25).
a. To remain faithful to God and mature in ministry, one must have a covering that ensures the proper teaching and fellowship for the Christian Life. Where there is good ‘follow-ship,’ there is good fellowship. Make sure that whatever church you become a part of is conducive to spiritual growth through the word of God.

5) Be baptized (Matthew 28:18-20, Acts 2:41).
a. Baptism or water submersion is the outward sign and testimony of what has happened in your life. It’s the washing away of the old man (the old way of life) to the new man (the new way of life).

6) Evangelize: Tell others about God (Mark 5:19, Luke 12:8-9).
a. Tell others what Christ has done for you. Don’t be ashamed to confess Him daily as your savior before men. Minister your conversion so that others will know that they can be saved too.

The Christian Life is a battlefield, not a bed of roses. To be born again is only the beginning. As a Christian you will face many tests and trials, but don’t worry. The Lord your God has overcome them all. As we walk in Him, remember we are victorious because of His shared blood. A life for a life does not make us conquerors. It makes us more than conquerors through Jesus Christ our Lord. Rise up and live this new life that has been given unto you in Jesus’ name. Amen.
