Recently, friends, family and members gathered at the Goodwill Industries for an awards ceremony held to honor 21 young ladies. The members of the Nashville Metropolitan Alumnae chapter (NMAC) of Delta Sigma Theta, Inc. awarded the ladies with $24,000 in scholarships.
The ceremony began with the honoring of one non-traditional adult scholarship by the Fortitude Foundation of Delta Sigma Theta and another adult scholarship by the ‘Survivors of the Storm’ line members of NMAC. The remaining 19 scholarships were presented to graduating high school seniors from students from the following counties: Davidson, Maury, Sumner, Wilson and Williamson.
“It is very rewarding to see the development of the young ladies through their years in high school until graduation,” said Ruth Mitchell, chair of the scholarship program for over 15 years. These are our future leaders of America and it is great to see them come into their own over the years. For many, they are the first in their families to graduate and have the opportunity to attend college.” She was excited as she spoke of the aspirations of the recipients. “Their thoughts and interests in the future were in science, stem cell research, math and other careers on that level.”
NMAC offers several programs intended to benefit those, young and old, living within the chapter service areas. Their annual events include a golf tournament, in May; feeding the homeless; Jabberwock; G.E.M.S.; EMBODI, Delta Academy G.I.R.L.S.; and Project S.M.A.R.T.
All scholarships were presented by members of NMAC, Cleshette Hudson, NMAC president; Ruth Mitchell, scholarship chair and Jevetta Mitchell, co-chair.
