At some point in time we have all felt a great sense of fatigue. Whether working long hours, following an illness, or even during this time of a pandemic where we all are weary of wearing masks and being distant from friends, family and loved ones. We all must rest. The Bible says that even God took time to rest after creating light in a void atmosphere by sprinkling stars in the sky to light the night and tossing the sun up to light the day; carving out mountains, valleys and lakes; making living creatures to walk the earth, live in the seas along with those that fly through the air. On the seventh day, He rested.
During this journey with Rev. Enoch Fuzz, pastor of Corinthian Missionary Baptist Church, he often receives calls simply asking: “How are you doing?” With a diagnosis of stage four lung cancer, one wouldn’t know what to expect his answer to be on any given day. His answer will be what he feels at that time.
This week, on a call, he simply said: “I’m tired.”
He is resting. Earlier we talked about being fatigued, and he indicated it was the rest that rejuvenates us. Rest is sometimes more than just sleeping. It is a break from the hustle and bustle of your life. It is a break from the day-to-day drive that sometimes drives us harder than usual. It is a break from the normal. We often stop and regroup by watching a movie, relaxing with a book or doing something that removes us from a ‘tiring’ thing. Therefore, to hear Rev. Fuzz say he is tired is an indication he is in need of removing himself from a tiring situation. While his voice sounded weak at first, in a matter of minutes during the conversation, he was laughing.
This week, in his journey with cancer, he is good. He is always in a constant state of rejuvenation as he confronts the days ahead. Upon our ‘rest,’ we often awaken with a refreshed spirit to face the new challenges of the day, the week, the future. Rest is so important, it is incorporated into our daily lives in a 24-hour span. That rejuvenation is needed each and every day.
Therefore, we look forward to what will be presented when the pandemic releases us and we look forward to what will be presented when Rev. Fuzz has rested and rejuvenated along his journey. As we grow weary, remember to rest. The best is yet to come.
