We have heard the term ‘music soothes the savage beast.’ But there are many ‘savage beasts.’ Have you ever noticed how music can formulate your mood? Music can create a mood, alter a mood or simply put you in a certain state of mind. Of course, we all know the implications of candlelight and music, dance music for a celebration, or even lullaby music. There is also lots to say about music in the Bible’s book of Psalms.
As Rev. Fuzz continues his journey with stage 4 lung cancer, he also experiences days of extreme discomfort. This week he made an emergency visit to the hospital as he experienced severe pain in his left hip. The hospital determined that cancer had spread to his bone. He awaits for more testing regarding that diagnosis, hopefully with more answers.
After a day of physical therapy and a doctor’s appointment, a quick and almost routine “Fuzz, how are you doing today?” received the reply: “In bed resting—not one of my best days. But I’m listening to gospel music on Youtube. It always makes me feel better.” He said that he had been in pain most of the day. Yet, the gospel songs seemed to soothe the savage beast known as ‘cancer.’
Rev. Fuzz spends a lot of time in bed, resting. Sometimes resting from the day’s activities, sometimes resting from shortness of breath and sometimes resting from pain. Either way, he says that he usually starts listening to gospel music and sermons at 4 am every morning.
“Most days when I’m not feeling well, it always helps,” he said. “And I also use it to fall asleep.” Finding a way to ease his dislike for having to stay in bed more than he prefers, listening to gospel music gives him that relief. “I’m always amazed at how well it works,” he said.
Throughout all of his pains and battles with the ‘savage beast’ known as stage 4 lung cancer, Rev. Enoch Fuzz, pastor of the Corinthian Baptist Church, continues to believe in his miracle. He works through his circumstance one day at a time, knowing that God will take care of him. With that knowledge, he will deliver a sermon on Father’s Day entitled ‘The Lord is My Shepherd.’
