During this season of giving, it must also be a time of remembering that some people have daily thoughts of their next meal. Last year, during his journey with stage four lung cancer, Rev. Enoch Fuzz, pastor of Corinthian MBC, headed a campaign to raise funds for the Food Pharmacy, housed in Nashville General Hospital.
With the help and leadership of Rev. Fuzz, over $100,000 was raised for the Food Pharmacy last year and over 60,000 meals were delivered to those in need during the tornado devastation. Three hundred thousand people were served. This year, the campaign, called ‘Nourish the Heart,’ is again encouraging the public to support these efforts with monetary donations. Again, Rev. Fuzz leads in these efforts while he also continues his cancer journey with stage four lung cancer.
It is necessary to receive donations of funds so that the proper foods will be purchased in order to stock the Food Pharmacy. The Food Pharmacy is a pantry that supplies only foods that are heart healthy.
“Brown rice. People love rice, but this rice is better for you than white rice,” said Rev. Fuzz. “We should never allow people to go hungry in this city.” The pharmacy is open to anyone in need of food It began as an effort to provide proper foods for those people who were diagnosed with illnesses that required a better diet in order to maintain better health with their condition. However, it has been determined that eating healthy can also prevent some of those illnesses such as high blood pressure, diabetes, and other illnesses that are most suffered by those living in certain communities. The Food Pharmacy is also targeting those families who have children at home, due to COVID-19 or parents out of work. Children being in school accounts for the only meal some will receive.
Nourish the Heart delivers fresh fruits and vegetables, lean meats and grains. This effort is accomplished in love. 1 Corinthian 13:13 states that love is the greatest of faith, hope and love. “I like the slogan we use because these meals nourish the heart,” said Rev. Fuzz. “They nourish the body and they help people.” The Food Pharmacy at Nashville General Hospital offers faith to those in need, along with hope for a better lifestyle. This act of giving is truly a great gift to those who continue to use the Pharmacy as their source of food.
