Nashville VOAD hosts ‘March 2021 Flood and Severe Storms Day of Remembrance’ anniversary event

Home gutted due to flood damage.

Nashville Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster (VOAD) is hosting a day of remembrance event on Saturday, March 26, from 2-4 pm for survivors and community members to reflect on the loss and recovery due to the March 2021 Flood and Severe Storms. The ‘Day of Remembrance’ gathering is set to take place at Plaza Mariachi in the Xenote event room (3955 Nolensville Pike, Nashville Tenn. 37211) at the heart of the neighborhoods most affected by last year’s storms.

Activities appropriate for all ages, include opportunities to create an expressive art piece; place a memory on seed paper and plant in a remembrance garden; talk with counselors or emotional support providers if desired; share a survivor story while capturing it through an audio recording; and/or quietly reflecting as event organizers reflect on those we lost and the hope and healing process of disaster recovery.

Recognizing that not all affected by this disaster have yet recovered, the event will acknowledge both the progress made and the work left to be done.

A community garden will also include flower bulbs in remembrance of each of the six lives lost in the greater Nashville area flooding. A moment of silence will be kept in remembrance of each of those lost. Counselors and clergy will be available in English, Spanish, and Swahili. The Remembrance Ceremony will be in both English and Spanish.

Since March 27-28, 2021, many community organizations and city-wide agencies have helped in the local recovery efforts of our neighbors. These include:
