Jesus told the story of a rich farmer whose crops produced abundantly. But this man had a misplaced focus that caused him to be self-centered and short-sighted. He was so concerned about laying up for himself earthly treasures and providing for his own comfort and security that he failed to make preparations to meet God.
“The rich man’s farm produced a big crop, and he said to himself, what can I do? I don’t have a place large enough to store everything. I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones, where I can store all my grain and other goods. Then I’ll say to myself, you have stored up enough good things to last for years to come. Live, eat, drink, and enjoy yourself,” Luke 12:16-21.
What did Jesus say to the rich man? “You fool! Tonight you will die. Then who will get what you have stored up for your soul?”
This is what happens to people who store up everything for themselves but are poor in the sight of God. This should serve as a warning for us today. It’s right to work and earn a living, but don’t become so absorbed with your cares of this life, including hobbies and material pursuits. Our affections become earthbound and we lose a clear focus on the more important matters of life. In addition, the alluring enticements of the world can cloud our spiritual vision and move us downward.
“Seek those things which are above, where Christ sits on the right hand of God. Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth,” Colossians 3:1-2.
In our uncertain and troubled times, we do not know what will come or what lies ahead. Let us keep our focus riveted on Christ the one who has promised to never leave us nor forsake us. When we look with his grace, we should know that it is sufficient to meet all our needs.
“My grace is sufficient for you,” 2 Corinthians 12:9. Grace is manifested by salvation that will meet all your needs. God will give you grace to weather any storm. When troubled times come, and when things begin to look uncertain, look up and lift up your heads, because your redemption draws nigh. “By faith as born again Christians, we look beyond our temporary light affliction which is but for a moment. Works for us are far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory,” 2 Corinthians 4: 17. Keep your focus centered on unseen spiritual realities of God—the heavenly values that matter the most for eternity.
