On February 12 of this year, football fans across the nation gathered to cheer on their favorite team making it to Super Bowl LVII. Some readers may not want to be reminded that the Kansas City Chiefs pulled off the victory (38-35) on that day against the Philadelphia Eagles. Both teams were dedicated to the ‘win.’ The lead quarterback for the Chiefs, Patrick Mahomes, had been previously injured some weeks prior. While suffering with his ankle injury, his perseverance to continue to play in the Super Bowl game while in sometimes noticeable pain led them to victory.
Rev. Enoch Fuzz, the pastor of Corinthian MBC, was diagnosed with stage four lung cancer in early 2020. Also, he had experienced a few health difficulties prior to this diagnosis, indicating that things were not normal. Of course, he continued to work and do all the things that he normally did—even in discomfort and without the knowledge of what was ailing him. When it was determined that there was a problem that demanded attention, this put him into another season of his life.
It has been a long journey thus far. However, Rev. Fuzz is moving forward and healing. He is always optimistic along his journey, often saying that someone else has a situation worse than his. With some difficult days and the need for oxygen he said: “I’m okay. I have to play with the pain and just stay in the game.”
Playing football with an injury is not the same as living to minister. You normally have over a period of years with a consuming disease like cancer. It’s quite different. Yet, the concept of continuing to persevere through pain and unforeseen issues that arise to come out victorious is the same.
You, too, must ‘stay in the game.’ Everyone has situations that cause complications in comfort and lifestyle. These are overcome with prayer and perseverance. “Preach the word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage—with great patience and careful instruction,” 2 Timothy 4:2. While this was written for preaching, it is also true of praying.
