While we approach a weekend of looking back during the observance of Memorial Day, it sparks a look at all memories. The time not only sparks memories, but also creates thoughts of encouragement. As Rev. Enoch Fuzz, pastor of Corinthian Missionary Baptist Church, remembers his diagnosis of stage 4 lung cancer, he notes that this is the month of the initial diagnosis and how it has unfolded over three years.
As we continue to reflect on the past three “long and tough years,” the most memorable of those times for Rev. Fuzz are four phone calls made on May 3, from Dr. Rachel Thomas.
“Dr Thomas pleaded with me that night with at least four phone calls, begging me. She said: ‘Pastor Fuzz, I’m on my knees praying and all I hear is God telling me to get you to hospital.’ I remember my vivid rejection of her plea, “Dr. Rachel, I’m not gonna go to no hospital on a Sunday night.”
But Dr. Thomas persisted throughout the night, pleading that God was telling her that Rev. Fuzz needed to go to the hospital. He admits to being as stubborn as she was persistent. On Monday morning, Fuzz recalled: “I woke up soaking wet. I’m terrified with the thought that I’d contracted the COVID19 virus. So now I have no choice except to call for EMT to get me. So I succumbed to Dr. Rachel and let her know, I’m calling the ambulance to take me to the hospital.” Needless to say, she was extremely pleased and said: “Thank you God,” as she assured Rev. Fuzz that she would meet him at the emergency room.
“Little did I know she was one of the doctors in charge of the emergency room,” said Rev. Fuzz. “The care I received was immediate and intensive. So to say ‘God has his eye on the sparrow and He watches over me’ is an understatement.”
While the journey has been a long one, Rev. Fuzz remains steadfast in his prayers and looks forward to his complete recovery. “After three years I must say, ‘But God—my testimony is that if it had not been for the Lord on my side…” said Rev. Fuzz.
Rev. Fuzz reminds himself and others: “God takes care of His people and often He uses people like Dr. Rachel Thomas to bring about His will when Enoch is too stubborn to heed wisdom.”
