Trump announced his pick of Sen. James David (J.D.) Vance of Ohio as his running mate on the first day of the Republican National convention, and just two days after an assassination attempt.
Vance is an author, venture capitalist, politician, lawyer, and former United States Marine serving as the junior United States senator from Ohio since 2023.
“After lengthy deliberation and thought, and considering the tremendous talents of many others, I have decided that the person best suited to assume the position of vice president of the United States is Sen. J.D. Vance of the great state of Ohio,” Trump said.
“J.D. honorably served our country in the Marine Corps, graduated from Ohio State University in two years, Summa Cum Laude, and is a Yale Law School graduate, where he was editor of the Yale Law Journal, and president of the Yale Law Veterans Association.
“J.D.’s book, Hillbilly Elegy,” became a major best seller and movie, as it championed the hardworking men and women of our country. J.D. has had a very successful business career in technology and finance, and now, during the campaign, will be strongly focused on the people he fought so brilliantly for, the American workers and farmers in Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, Ohio, Minnesota, and far beyond.”
Just a short time ago, Vance was one of Trump’s toughest critics calling him an “idiot” and “reprehensible” as well as comparing him to Adolf Hitler.
However, Vance has since changed his stance and become one of Trump’s most enthusiastic supporters.
President Biden responded to the selection of Vance saying, “Here’s the deal about J.D. Vance. He talks a big game about working people. But now, he and Trump want to raise taxes on middle-class families while pushing more tax cuts for the rich.”
