Bizz Bigsby, a North Nashville native and genre-blending artist, has released his debut single, ‘Here In This Town,’ a moving anthem that speaks to personal hardship, resilience, and the enduring power of hope. Co-written with Phil Hughley, the single marks the first release ahead of Bigsby’s upcoming full-length album, set to debut on September 19.
Drawing from his own life experiences, Bigsby delivers a deeply emotional track that addresses the pain of broken relationships, the loss of community, and the struggle to be seen and understood. The lyrics echo with determination and the will to persevere, portraying a powerful metaphor: a rose growing through concrete—symbolizing beauty and strength in adversity.
“I originally wrote this song about what happened to my neighborhood after the interstate came through in the 1970s and destroyed the community,” said Bigsby. “But it’s ultimately about redemption and forgiveness. It applies to any situation where someone feels like they’re fighting against impossible odds. It’s about recognizing that something bigger than you is at work.”
Bigsby, born Wendell Bigsby, grew up in North Nashville under the care of his grandmother and great-aunts. His father, a musician who performed with legends like Little Richard, was largely absent but still left an indelible mark. At just four years old, Bizz witnessed the tragic shooting of his mother—an event that would shape a life filled with struggle, including a years-long battle with addiction.
Despite his hardships, Bigsby found refuge in music. Fusing the soulful roots of Jefferson Street’s R&B legacy with the storytelling of country, blues, and rock, his sound (described as ‘Urban Americana’) is raw, honest, and deeply personal. Influenced by artists like Sam Cooke, George Jones, and James Taylor, Bigsby creates music that resonates with a wide audience.
His musical journey began when his father, Nashville R&B icon Jimmy Church, invited him to join his touring band. One night, when the lead singer fell ill, Bizz stepped in—and what was supposed to be a two-show fill-in turned into five years of touring, during which he opened for icons like James Brown, Aretha Franklin, and Little Richard. Those formative years on stage shaped his voice and performance style.
Since overcoming addiction 12 years ago, Bigsby has emerged as a powerful songwriter whose music tells the story of survival and renewal. ‘Here In This Town’ is a testament to that journey—a declaration of faith, forgiveness, and the strength to move forward.
“I don’t tell these stories because they’re about me,” Bigsby said. “I tell them because I know I’m not alone. If I made it through, you can too. I want my music to bring hope to the hopeless, because I’ve been there.”
