The members, family and friends of the Historic First Community Church (HFCC) will celebrate 85 years of Christian service on Sunday, August 27. HFCC has reached another milestone. The prepared celebration will honor and salute its great history.

The chosen theme for the occasion is ‘Abounding in Faith, Love, Grace and Generational Blessings’ taken from “As for you, you shall keep My covenant, you and your descendants after you throughout their generations,” Genesis 17:9.

HFCC will hold one worship service at 11 am. The special guest speaker will be Rev. Dr. Cordy Tindell Vivian, mostly known at ‘C.T. Vivian.’ Rev. Vivian is most noted as a civil rights activist and close friend and lieutenant of Martin Luther King, Jr. during the Civil Rights Movement. He currently resides in Atlanta, Georgia where he has recently founded the C.T. Vivian Leadership Institute, Inc.

In 2013, then President Barack Obama named Vivian as the recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom as a distinguished minister, author and organizer. He is also the founder of many civil rights organizations, including: Vision; the National Anti-Klan Network; and the Center for Democratic Renewal.

Dr. Vivian studied ministry at the American Baptist College in 1959 and is the former pastor of the Historic First Community Church.

“The HFCC church family extends a hearty thank you for your participation in helping us make our anniversary, pleasing in God’s sight,” said Dorothy Johnson, 85th anniversary chair. “We are truly excited about this occasion and about the direction and plans God has for our continued community endeavors.”

Historic First Community Church is located at 1815 Knowles St. under the leadership of Elder Glenn V. Clay, pastor.
