Even though Artober ended on Halloween the month of November brings plenty of art to experience, whether visual or performing art. There are several big concerts at many venues around town, as well as some pretty spectacular visual art to see in our local galleries. Of course, the 1st Saturday Art Crawl downtown on the Fifth Avenue of the Arts will be a perfect opportunity to visit dozens of exhibitions in many of the downtown galleries. Here are only a few highlights. Check them out Saturday Nov. 2 between 6 and 9 pm:
Gallery One is making noise now that they’ve moved downtown. See them in their new space at 213-3rd Avenue North. Nashville native K.J. Schumacher has some really cool work there. The work of Patricia Green was Gallery One’s Spotlight Artist during Artober Nashville, and is now available exclusively at Gallery One through December.
“Uncharted territory has always captured my imagination,” said Green, speaking of her fascination with the speculative unknown. “Abstract painting provides me an avenue for venturing into that space.” Green embraces the ambiguity of space and scale in her large pieces, pairing a Rothko-like intensity of color with the stroke of Kline and the rhythmic intuition of Kadinsky. “One brush stroke beckons another.”
Speaking of abstract expressionism, did you know that there is only one downtown gallery whose proprietor is an African American woman and that she is the only African American female abstract expressionist represented in the district?
“It is vibrant and has a lot of movement,” said artist Carol Lena Saffell. “I use the concept of creativity of my freed unconscious mind where freedom is to be found in primary basic art forms with involuntary action in a creative process.” You know the work is deep, because she is. Visit L Gallery in the upper Arcade space #73 formerly occupied by Twist gallery and see for yourself. Her work is amazing!
The Arts Company at 215 5th Ave N. has ‘Presenting Various Media, Artwork’ by Christie Nuell (Nov 2-23), and works by Brett Weaver, Joan Griswold, and Chip Cooper (through Nov 15).
‘Untitled Popup’ – Nov. 2 in the Art Crawl, at CoLab, 230-4th Ave. N. Check them out and get information about the Untitled Artist Group’s last show, ‘Undone Coming (Somewhere)’ on Nov. 16.
At Tinney Contemporary, 237 5th Ave. N., attend the closing reception for ‘With Wings: New Work’ by Jeanie Gooden, which is closing Nov. 16. Also see Lyle Carbajal’s works called ‘Unintentional’ in the Rear Gallery.
“I’ve always maintained that my work is about color and light and their effect on our emotions,” said Scott Upton. “My inspiration comes from nature, whose sublime forms and colors and chaotic power shape the ever-changing landscape.
