The city is getting ready for the annual Martin Luther King March and TSU Convocation on Monday, January 20, 2014. Many marchers will leave their churches; meeting at the Jefferson Street Baptist Church (2708 Jefferson Street) to by 9:45 a.m. for the final “leg” of the march. The marchers will leave Jefferson Street Church at 10 a.m. headed for the Tennessee State University (TSU) Gentry Center where the MLK Convocation will take place.

Adults and students that are not marching may go directly to the TSU Gentry Center for the Pre-Convocation activities. Entertainment is scheduled beginning at 10:15 a.m.

Marchers are due to reach the Gentry Center by 10:30 a.m. The Convocation will begin at 11 a.m.
The 2014 MLK activities are emphasizing diversity and youth.

The community is looking forward to the celebration. The Metro Human Relation Commission (MHRC) is taking an active part in this year’s celebration. Wiith the motto ‘One City for All People,’ the MHRC coordinators are urging all cultures to be involved. “The community will love seeing your celebration with talent, dancing, singing, poems and speeches,” said an MHRC coordinator.

A pre-march activity is planned for January 18, when the MLK Committee is planning a Youth Forum at the City Library Auditorium. A variety of subjects will be discussed such as ‘What did the MLK activities mean to you?;’ ‘How can students spread and fulfill the quest for better diversity?;’ and ‘What can we/you do to improve attitudes toward school?’ Students are invited to attend MLK activities that are being sponsored by the downtown Library throughout the day.
