‘Rebuilding Together Nashville’ offers free housing repairs

Rebuilding Together Nashville, a nonprofit working to provide free safe and healthy housing repairs for low-income homeowners, will host Building a Healthy Neighborhood this May 29, 30 and 31. The three-day rebuild will focus on repairing 15 homes, installing a new playground, cleaning up alleys and providing an overall effort to revitalize common areas. The event is a partnership between the Rebuilding Together National Office and the local Nashville affiliate as well as sponsors and community partners.

Rebuilding Together Nashville estimates that close to 1,000 volunteers will contribute to the rebuild over the three-day period. This includes attendees of the National Healthy Homes Conference, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, Rebuilding Together, HGTV and the DIY Network, which is scheduled several days prior to rebuild at the Music City Center.

“Rebuilding Together is excited to participate in its 4th Building a Healthy Neighborhood project, which will be held this May in Nashville to make a significant impact on the homes and lives in the Cleveland and McFerrin neighborhoods,” said Charley Shimanski, president/CEO of Rebuilding Together.
“We appreciate the support of our local affiliate, sponsors, community partners and volunteers to rebuilding safe and healthy homes as well as the community at large.”

Building a Healthy Neighborhood will focus on the Cleveland and McFerrin Park neighborhoods to provide critical home repairs and modifications for homes in the community.

The organization has been working in the area for the past year.

“We are pleased to be able to host Building a Healthy Neighborhood here in Nashville. Considering children spend 70% and aging adults as much of 90% of time in their home, making sure the environment is healthy is important,” said Becky Carter, executive director, Rebuilding Together Nashville.
“This block rebuild gives us the opportunity to have a conversation about the elements of healthy housing and the repairs and improvements that all homeowners can make to have healthy homes and communities.”

Rebuilding Together affiliates in Denver, Colo., Philadelphia, Pa. and Columbus, Ohio have all previously hosted this event.

Rebuilding Together Nashville is actively seeking community partners, sponsors and contributors to participate in the rebuild. Interested groups and individuals should contact Rebuilding Together Nashville at 615-297-3955 to get more information.
