A ‘tween tweet’ on peer culture

Hi! I am Lizzie, and like most teens, I tweet, Instagram, and sometimes Snapchat. Through these social media outlets, I read opinions about different issues, and, unlike most teens, I share this information with my mother, and she suggested writing about it—that people would really listen to me. This is my newspaper tweet. Hopefully, people will listen to Lizzie.

The truth is statistics show that most teens listen to their peers more than their parents. This is why it is really important that teens hang around the right people. Our peer culture must be reflective of who we really want to be in this life. People who have goals, who are really positive about life, and who do not force you to do things you do not want to do are good to have in your peer culture.

When I was in middle school, I really wanted to hang out with this particular group of girls, even though they were mean to me. My mother insisted that I choose some different friends, but I would not listen to her. I was so excited that they had asked me to participate in a dance routine with them as a part of a contest. Due to some circumstances, they were unable to participate. I did follow my mother’s advice and decided to do my own dance routine. I didn’t win, but I did get to perform. What I learned from this incident is that everyone is not your friend, and you cannot force them to be your friend. Sometimes, you have to do it solo. Listen to Lizzie.
