The Legal Aid Society has released its summer People’s Law School class schedule.
People’s Law School is a free program that provides an overview of legal issues that a typical person might face.
Taught by Legal Aid Society attorneys and volunteer attorneys, the weekly, one-hour classes will be held from 6-7 pm on Thursdays at Cohn Learning Center, 4805 Park Ave. and at Wright Middle School, 180 McCall St.
Offered May through July in partnership with the Nashville Community Education Commission, the classes will focus on a different legal topic each week. Anyone can take one or several classes at either location. A complete schedule is listed below.
“Nashvillians have found the diverse array of classes so informative and useful that they have been recommending them to friends and family,” said Adinah Robertson, community education coordinator for Legal Aid Society. “We have scheduled all classes for Thursdays this summer to create more consistency, and we look forward to continuing to educate people on relevant legal issues.”
The following classes will be held Thursday at 6 pm in Room 110 at Cohn Learning Center:
· (June 19) ‘Social Security Options’: This course will cover how to apply for and get Social Security retirement, disability, spouse and child payments, Medicare health insurance, Supplemental Security Income disability and old age payments.
· (June 26) ‘Basics of Consumer Bankruptcy’: This course will explain the different kinds of bankruptcy, who qualifies for them, what bankruptcy can and cannot do and tips on choosing a bankruptcy lawyer.
· (July 10) ‘Renter’s Rights’: You will learn your legal rights as a renter and how to assert them, what to look for in a lease, how to get your landlord to make repairs, how to get back your security deposit and more. This class will be held in Room 112.
· (July 17) ‘Medicaid for Nursing Home Care and Home Care’: This class will cover how to get TennCare/Medicaid to pay for home and community-based services or care in a nursing home.
