“Wave of Light” at 7 pm October 15th

Wave of Light
Mark your calendar for October 15 to light a candle at 7 pm in remembrance of pregnancy and infant loss.

Families around the United States will light candles in memory of all the precious babies who have been lost during pregnancy or in infancy on October 15, at 7 pm in all time zones.

In October of 1988, this day was proclaimed ‘Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day’ by President Ronald Reagan. If you or someone you know has suffered a miscarriage, stillbirth or infant loss due to SIDS/SUID, prematurity or other causes you are encouraged to join in this national tribute to create awareness of these tragic infant deaths and provide support for those that are suffering.

There are many families grieving in silence, sometimes never dealing with their loss. The goal of this organization is to “help others relate to the loss, know what to say, to do or not to say, and to help families live with their loss—not just ‘get over’ their loss,” according to founders.

October is SIDS, Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month. First Candle is joining forces with individuals, local, state and national organizations, as well as corporate and retail partners to increase awareness about the tragic causes of infant death.

There are a variety of activities recognizing this day in observance of this month with wakes, release of balloons, doves, etc. The Metro Public Health Department along with community partners is hosting this event to remember and honor all of our local babies who never reached their first birthday.

All parents, family, and friends are encouraged to attend Centennial Park’s main event shelter from 4-5:30 pm. The event will include art activities, music, and a remembrance ceremony.

The national ‘Wave of Light’ at 7 pm is created when the candles are lit at 7 in all time zones. This year the Parthenon will be lit in purple on the evening of October 15 in honor of ‘pregnancy and infant loss.’
