Thousands of Nashville’s most prominent African American entrepreneurs, leaders and socialites partied at the Municipal Auditorium for Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Nashville Alumnae Chapter’s, annual Holiday Soiree on December 10.

It was a night to remember and one of the classiest ‘invitation only’ affairs held in the Midstate. Delta Sigma Theta Sorority is a group of women vested in culture, education, loyalty and the empowerment of our community worldwide for over 100 years. Members, who are some of Nashville’s most prestigious leaders hosted over 50 tables. State Rep. Brenda Gilmore, Judge Rachel L. Bell, Property Assessor Vivian Wilhoite, and Sen. Thelma Harper were present just to name a few.

Everyone was dressed to the nines and each table carried its own flair. They provided an array of tasty food and drink for their guests, with no two alike. It was almost magical to see the overall transformation of the venue. The difference between the usual concert or sporting event to this Delta party was amazing. It was a ‘who’s who’ memorable event with a few of those in attendance listed including: City Councilwoman-at-Large Sharon Hurt; Publish-er/founder of the Tennessee Minority ages Tunishia Scott; Co-Founder and President of Campus RX Dr. Dorsha James; T. C. Cope, comedian; and Vernon Winfrey, media mogul Oprah Winfrey’s dad; Dr. Stephaine Hale Walker and her husband Presiding Bishop Joseph W. Walker III; along with many more.

The packed house danced to the turn table skills of Victor Chatman (Victor Chatman Productions). They included many members of the National Pan-Hellenic Council and their guests alike. All in all, it was a combination of empowerment and delightful fun. If the plans for next year’s annual event are not already in the works, no doubt they soon will be.

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority was founded on January 13, 1913 by 22 collegiate women at Howard University and incorporated in 1930. These students wanted to use their collective strength to promote academic excellence and to provide assistance to those in need. In March of 1913, the founders of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. performed their first public act. They participated in the Women’s Suffrage March in Washington, D.C.
