Minerva Foundation, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority celebrate Dr. Dorothy L. Brown’s legacy

The 10th annual celebration of Dr. Dorothy L. Brown’s legacy, returns to Meharry Medical College where Brown became the first African American female surgeon in the south. Phyllis Hildreth, J.D., first lady of Meharry Medical College, was the guest speaker for the 10th annual Dr. Dorothy L. Brown Humanitarian Breakfast. Betty Jennings, a dear friend and sorority sister, reflected on Dr. Dorothy L. Brown’s life and extraordinary career.

The 2016 Nontraditional Scholarship was awarded to Andrea Hancock, who will graduate from Tennessee State University with a Bachelor’s degree in ‘social work.’

Humanitarian Awards were distributed to Dr. Stephanie B.C. Bailey in the field of Health Care; Darrell Caldwell in the field of Children’s Service and Katrina Frierson in the field of Social Action. Each humanitarian demonstrated Dr. Browns’ qualities as ‘trailblazers.’ Past Humanitarians were also recognized. Mrs. Tommie Manning was honored with The Tommie Manning Games Extravaganza Award for her exceptional service to this event.

State Rep. Brenda Gilmore presided over the event, which included music by Gerald Dixon and songs by Lola Brown, daughter of Dr. Dorothy L. Brown. Dawana Wade delivered the invocation.

The breakfast was co-chaired by Marion Southall-White and Betty Thompson, and was held at the Cal Turner Center for Student Education of Meharry Medical College on November 5.
