Five-foot-11,” 201-pound Miami native Treon Harris has decided to bring his talents to Music City. The former Florida Gators quarterback decided to transfer last summer, choosing Tennessee State University following a fall visit. Harris recently enrolled, officially becoming a Tiger.
Harris, a junior, has two years of eligibility remaining. The four-star dual-threat prospect is eligible to play right away because Tennessee State is a 1-AA institution—meaning he’s transferring from an FBS to an FCS school. Coach Rod Reed said Harris would move back to quarterback at TSU.
Harris is expected to participate in spring practice and will be thrust into competition for the starting quarterback position with O’Shay Ackerman-Carter, who started in seven games as a redshirt freshman in 2015 and only three in 2016 due to injury.
“He’s athletic and will fit into our system and what we like to do,” said Reed.
Harris had an up-and-down career at Florida. He was named to the SEC All-Freshman Team in 2014. Harris then lost his starting job to Will Grier after the first week of the 2015 season, but later reclaimed the starting title for the final eight games after the NCAA suspended Grier. Harris started six games at Florida in 2014 and nine in 2015. In two seasons he completed a total of 174 of 346 passes for 2,695 yards (50%) with 18 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. He also rushed for 570 yards and three TDs.
Harris was suspended twice at Florida during the 2015 season. He missed a game for violating school policy and another when he was the subject of a sexual battery allegation investigation. He was reinstated after the complaint was withdrawn, but was suspended again at the start of spring practice in 2016. Harris had been expected to transition to wide receiver for the Gators in the fall of 2016. That’s when he decided to make the move.
Harris led Miami’s Booker T. Washington to a National Championship as a senior in high school and played in the 2014 U.S. Army All-American Bowl as a safety. Treon was ranked as the nation’s No. 9 athlete and the No. 18 prospect in Florida in the 2014 class.
All eyes will be on Treon this spring and fall, as the Tigers gear up for 2017-18 season.
