Metro launches short-term rental property hotline

In an effort to address the negative impact some short-term rental properties (STRPs) have on residential neighborhoods, Mayor Megan Barry is announcing the launch of a hotline to catalog and respond to neighborhood complaints.

Operated by the nation’s leading experts in this field, Host Compliance, the service is a 24/7 hotline for neighbors to report unpermitted short-term rentals and filing noise, parking, trash and other nuisance complaints about specific vacation rental properties operating in the city and county.

“Short-term rentals, as originally intended, can be a great way for responsible visitors to experience our city while helping individuals and families earn a little extra cash when they are away from home,” said Mayor Barry. “Our hope is that this hotline will make it easier to identify and track down irresponsible property owners who are operating illegally or who fail to address the quality of life concerns for residents in the neighborhood where STRPs are operating.”

Staffed around the clock, the call center provides a single point of contact for people to record complaints related to specific short-term rental properties operating within the city and county. Complaints can be filed online or by calling the hotline at (435) STR-HELP (787-4357).

“Regulations can often seem meaningless without proper enforcement, and this tool provided by Host Compliance will make it easier to enforce the laws on our books,” said District 18 Councilmember Burkley Allen. “This service will help responsible STRP owners to better monitor the activity at their home when they are away and give Metro the evidence and tools necessary to shut down nuisance operators and those without a permit.”

Short-term rentals operating without permits and guests behaving badly can bother neighbors and present serious problems, especially at night and on weekends. Now, with this new 24/7 hotline, neighbors can call any time to reach an operator who will assess the situation and attempt to solve the problems as they occur. The hotline will thus help ensure that Metropolitan Govern-ment of Nashville and Davidson County can hold hosts and guests accountable for their actions.
