It was the 28th meeting between Tennessee State University and the University Of Tennessee Martin, however, no game may have been as memorable as the one they played on Saturday, November 17, to celebrate Senior Day with 3,618 friends, fans, and family in Hale Stadium on a relatively warm, sunny autumn afternoon. Head Coach Rod Reed finished his ninth season at the helm of the Tigers with a 53-47 record, and that 53rd victory came in overtime.
After holding a 12-3 halftime lead, anchored by senior DeVon Johnson’s first touchdown of the day from TSU QB Cameron Rosendahl, the Skyhawks tied the game at 18-18 early in the fourth quarter. Johnson caught his 2nd TD midway through the period to give the Tigers a 25-18 lead, which held until Devonte Howard of UTM scored on a 43 yarder to tie the game at 25-25 with ten seconds remaining.
In overtime, TSU won the coin toss and went on defense, holding the Skyhawks to a 20-yard field goal. TSU took possession for the final time, capping a 4-play drive with a 4 yard touchdown on — you guessed it — senior DeVon Johnson’s third score of the day! Your final — 31-28, TSU.
Prior to the game, eleven football seniors were honored, along with two senior Cheerleaders: Cochilla Wright, a Biology major and Brionne Young, Criminal Justice major. During half-time, the Aristocrat of Bands saluted their nineteen seniors. After the football game, the TSU mens basketball team handily defeated the visiting Bulldogs of Fisk University 113-61 in Gentry Center with 1,682 in attendance. TSU was led by junior guard Tripp Davis, who had a monster game with 24 points, six rebounds, three assists, and two steals.
